“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day.’”
— Exodus 16:4
Wilderness seasons can feel inevitable—times when life feels barren, uncertain, and exhausting. I know this has been my feeling lately in terms of my running. It’s not that I have been in a rut, but I am definitely lost as I continue to rebuild my fitness in returning from Achilles tendonopathy.
As runners, we understand this “wilderness narrative” in a real and physical sense. There are long runs where every step feels heavier, where our energy wanes, and we question if we have the strength to continue. Spiritually, we can experience similar struggles when our path seems unclear, and we wonder if God is still providing for us.
Exodus 16 carries a story of the Israelites in the wilderness—hungry, weary, and doubting. They were wandering the desert, awaiting God’s leadership and shepherding to the promised land, and their hunger felt all-consuming. In this moment, God provided manna, sustaining them daily, not with excess but with enough.
A powerful reminder that God’s provision is not always about abundance but about sufficiency. When we face seasons of uncertainty, whether in our spiritual journey, personal struggles, or even our running goals, God invites us to trust that there will be enough for today.
Much like training, faith requires us to show up daily, relying on God’s provision rather than our own strength. We may not see the full picture, but step by step, God provides what we need to keep moving forward.
Where in your life do you feel like you’re running through the wilderness? How can you trust God to provide enough for today?
