“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.”—Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
I love that this section of Ecclesiastes, beginning with 4:9 and continuing to 16, is called “The Value of a Friend.”
I stand firm in the idea that our very nature of creation is a calling to be in community. The shared gifts that we are able to bring together for the betterment of the world around us is what is meant to be the key feature of the coming Kin-dom of God. It is this blessing of shared community that gives us strength.
Whether in faith or fitness, none of this is meant to be done alone. Within community we are able to lift one another up and celebrate any and all accomplishments. We have support when we are low, and fellow humans to celebrate the journey with.
As I have gotten more involved in the run-community space, the more I think community is the essential thing that can build us up. It is not a place to compare accomplishments or be judged against another. Rather it is a place where we share the journey and the difficulties along the way. From the front to back we are all accomplishing amazing things, and it is in gathering together that we are able to recognize the strength that our bonds can truly create.
How can you find community that can help to support you in your faith or fitness?
