This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
— Psalm 118:24
In an age where many runners have training schedules at their fingertips, it’s easy to see the entire plan laid out—every workout, every mile, everything.
However, for professional runners and some others—depending on the app, technology, or coach they use—workouts are given one day at a time. At first, this might seem counterintuitive: How am I supposed to prepare if I don’t know what’s coming?
But that’s the point. The goal is to focus on the workout in front of you. Tomorrow will bring its own challenge, but today is about this easy run, this speed workout, or this long run—whatever is on the schedule.
The psalmist in today’s verse not only offers a joyful outlook on life but also presents the perfect mindset for training. If we can’t find joy or focus in the present moment, how will we ever recognize God’s grace in our lives? Yes, God calls us in incredible ways, and that calling remains, but we cannot complete tomorrow’s workout until we’ve finished today’s.
Why worry about Thursday’s speed run when it’s Tuesday and you’re meant to focus on an easy run? The same applies to life—when we get too caught up in the future, we risk missing or failing to appreciate what’s happening in the present.
We move forward by doing today what needs to be done—by seeing the present as the gift God has made it, by taking the next right step, and by trusting that tomorrow will come in its own time.
What in your life today brings you joy and gratitude?
