Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
— John 6:35
Ask any runner, and they’ll tell you—one of the hardest parts of training for and running a marathon is fueling.
The human body requires a careful balance of carbohydrates, protein, glycogen, fat, and other essential nutrients to sustain itself over 26.2 miles. It doesn’t matter whether you’re running at an elite pace or a party pace—everyone covering that distance must consider not only hydration (water and electrolytes) but also how to replenish the body’s energy to avoid “bonking” or worse.
That’s why runners practice their nutrition strategy for marathons and even half-marathons. They experiment to find what works best and how much they need to maximize their potential.
In Scripture, Jesus offers the Spirit of life as fuel for our journey, using a metaphor many of us can relate to. In times of need, when we hunger for meaning, purpose, or strength, Jesus reminds us: He is the bread of life. When we seek to follow Christ’s call, our spiritual hunger is satisfied.
Our continual turning to Christ serves as a reminder—especially in moments of sorrow and struggle—that He is always with us. Just as runners train their bodies to rely on proper nourishment, we train our faith to depend on the sustenance Christ offers. And when we are out on the journey, His nourishment is already there. We are well prepared for the path ahead.
Where do you find spiritual nourishment, and how do you carry it with you?
